The reader is shown this from very early on that Celia and Marco have no freedom in their life, and that all they are supposed to do is compete in the challenge, not only in words, but in smaller symbols such as birds. Freedom is something that the characters in the novel, especially Celia and Marco, don’t have much of. Sometimes she also uses second person to not only make the reader feel as if they are in the circus, but to add more detail into more scenes and to get the reader wondering why it is like that throughout the entire novel.įreedom is an idea that Morgenstern constantly uses in this novel and ties this idea with the symbol of birds. ![]() Morgenstern connects readers to the story by taking emotions that they feel and modify them in a fantasy manner that may not be real, but people wish it was. In addition, rings bind not only Celia and Marco together, but Bailey and the circus, and without these rings, The Night Circus would not be the same. The amount of red that appears in the novel increases throughout the story which shows the evolution of the characters. Birds appear many times in the novel, which becomes very important to Celia and her purpose not only in the circus but in her life. In this 2011 adult fantasy novel, written by Erin Morgenstern, there are many different symbols that represent deeper meanings such as birds, the colour red, and rings/ the broken inkwell.
